Definitions

The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the central processing unit of a server that executes tasks and processes data to keep your hosted websites and apps operational and running smoothly.

Before you start

✅ Your hosting account has a set amount of CPU resources dependent on your hosting plan, shared across all your hosted websites and apps.

🚨 If your CPU usage is too high, it can slow down all of your hosted websites, or trigger crashes and errors. If you notice high CPU usage on a consistent basis, consider the following actions:

  • ➡️ Optimize: Reduce the number of plugins on your website, compress images, or use a caching tool to decrease CPU load. Go to this guide for steps: Run an X-ray report to diagnose a slow website.
  • ➡️ Isolate: If you have many websites on the same hosting plan, they share one set of CPU resources. Consider isolating websites onto separate hosting accounts for isolated CPU access.
  • ➡️ Upgrade: To keep all websites on a single plan with increased CPU resources, consider upgrading to a hosting plan with more resources.

⚠️ Keeping an eye on your CPU usage helps keep your hosted sites and apps fast and reliable.

Step by step

1. Log in to your hosting control panel

2. Click on the Resource Usage button

3. Click on the Current Usage tab

4. Look for the CPU Usage graph

5. On the CPU Usage graph, you will see a green line indicating average use and a red line where the CPU limit is set for your hosting plan. Any lines above the red limit line show instances where CPU resources were exceeded on your hosting account.

6. You can modify the timeframe of the CPU usage by adjusting the Timeframe and Time Unit drop downs

7. To view the specific processes on your hosting account that are triggering high CPU usage, click on Snapshot from the top menu and then Process List and HTTP Queries to view details
