Definitions
When you transfer a domain name to us, you move your domain registration to our platform, making us your new domain registrar.
This differs from transferring a website or email, which moves your data to your hosting service. A domain transfer only moves the domain registration.
For domain transfers, here are some key terms:
EPP Code
- Definition: A unique code used to transfer your domain between registrars.
- Also called: Auth code, domain authorization code, domain transfer code, etc.
- Applies to: All domain extensions, except *uk domains.
IPS Tag
- Definition: A unique identifier used to transfer UK domains between registrars.
- Also called: Internet Provider Security tag, Internet Provider Service tag.
- Applies to: *uk domain extensions only.
Domain Registrar
- Definition: A company that manages the registration of your domain name.
- Also called: Domain registration provider, domain provider, domain name provider, etc.
Domain Extension
- Definition: The end part of your domain name, for example: .com, .uk, .org, .info, etc.
- Also called: TLD (Top Level Domain), domain type, domain ending, etc.
ICANN
- Definition: The organization that coordinates global domain name system rules and regulations.
- Full name: Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers
Before you start

There are three phases to a domain transfer. Your domain extension determines the steps you complete to prep and transfer, but you must complete all the steps in all three phases for a successful domain transfer:

⏰ Domain transfers typically take 5-7 days to complete from the date you submit the transfer.
❗When you submit a domain name transfer, nameserver changes are locked and disabled during the transfer period. You cannot change nameservers until the transfer is complete.
🚨Submit domain transfers individually; bulk transfers are not allowed for security reasons. For bulk transfer requests (more than 5 domains), prep your domains and open a support ticket with the transfer information.
⚠️ This guide provides general guidelines for each step. If you’ve already completed a step, skip ahead to the section that matches your current step.
Step by step
✅ Eligibility
In this section, you’ll confirm that the domain you want to transfer meets all the eligibility requirements for a successful domain transfer. Eligibility requirements are the same for all domain extension types.
1. Log in to your user dashboard at your current domain registrar, where your domain is currently managed and from which you want to move your domain name away from
2. Go to your domain and check the following:
✔️ Your domain is active and not expired ‡
✔️ Your domain is older than 60 days
✔️ Your domain had no registrar transfers in the last 60 days
✔️ Your domain had no contact information changes in the last 60 days
‡ According to ICANN, you have the right to transfer expired domains, depending on the lapsed period and rules set out by each private registry. If your domain is expired, contact your current registrar to find out.
3. Once you’ve checked your domain ✅ Eligibility, go to the section for your domain extension to 📋 Prep and ↪️ Transfer it to us
All Domain Extensions
ℹ️ These steps apply to all domain extensions, including .com, .net, .biz, .org, .info, and others. They do not apply to *uk domain extensions. For those, refer to its specific section further below.
😊 When you transfer your domain to us, an additional year is added to its registration period. You’ll keep the time you paid for with your current registrar, and gain an extra year upon transfer.
📋 Prep
⚠️ Note: Section names and locations may vary by registrar. If you’re unsure or encounter errors, check your current domain registrar official help documentation or support channels.
1. Log in to your user dashboard at your current domain registrar, where your domain is currently managed and from which you want to move your domain name away from
2. Find the Domains management section
3. Go to the domain name you want to prep for transfer
4. If your domain has Private Registration (also called WHOIS Protection, Domain Privacy, or ID Protection), turn it OFF
⚠️ Note: Some domain registrars don’t allow disabling domain privacy on certain domain names. If you can’t find an option to disable it, leave it enabled and go to the next step.
5. Go to the Domain Lock section and UNLOCK your domain
6. Request the EPP/Auth code via email or get it directly from your dashboard
7. Depending on your registrar, you might get the EPP/Auth code immediately or via email. Some registrars make you wait a few days before emailing you, so keep an eye on your mailbox (including Junk folders).
❗Note: If the registrar emails you the EPP/Auth code, make sure to take note of the email address they will send your domain name transfer code to, so you check the correct email mailbox.
8. Once you obtain your EPP code for your domain name, note it down securely and move to the ↪️ Transfer steps below
↪️ Transfer
1. Log in to your user dashboard with us
2. From the top, click the Order button
3. Select Domains from the dropdown
4. Select Transfer Domain
5. Enter the domain name you want to transfer. Make sure to type it out fully and with no typos. Then, click the Transfer button. In our example, we will transfer the domain name cloudhelper.com
6. You’ll get a popup at the bottom of your page. On there, click the Order selected domains button.
7. In the EPP Code field, enter the EPP/Auth code you obtained from your current registrar
8. Check the box next to ID Protection (Optional, however it keeps you safe from spam and fraud)
9. You’ll get a popup at the bottom of your page. On there, click the Continue button.
10. Review your order and when you’re ready, scroll down and click the Checkout button
11. Your domain transfer is now submitted. You need to wait for your current registrar to release your domain, which typically takes 5 to 7 days. Once the transfer is complete, you will receive a confirmation email from us.
*UK Domain Extensions Only
ℹ️ These steps apply only to *uk domain extensions, such as .uk, .co.uk, .org.uk, and other common domains with .uk in the extension.
😊 When you transfer your *uk domain to us, the transfer is free and retains your existing registration period from your current registrar.

1. Log in to your user dashboard at your current domain registrar, where your domain is currently managed and from which you want to move your domain name away from
2. Find the Domains management section
3. Go to the domain name you want to prepare for transfer
4. Go to the Domain Lock section and UNLOCK your domain
5. Find the Release Domain or Change IPS Tag section
6. Change your domain name tag to our tag, which is:

1. Log in to your user dashboard with us
2. From the top, click the Order button
3. Select Domains from the dropdown
4. Select Transfer Domain
5. Enter the domain name you want to transfer. Make sure to type it out fully and with no typos. Then, click the Transfer button. In our example, we will transfer the domain name cloudhelp.uk
6. You’ll get a popup at the bottom of your page. On there, click the Order selected domains button.
7. On the next page, click the Continue button
