Change the PHP version on your hosting account

Definitions

The PHP version on your web hosting account is the specific release of the PHP scripting language that your account uses to run all of your hosted websites and apps.

Before you start

✅ The PHP version on your hosting account is global, meaning it applies to all of your hosted websites and apps. This guide shows you how to change the global PHP version on your hosting account.

ℹ️ If you need to apply a specific PHP version per website or app, you will need to use multi-PHP, please follow the steps in this guide instead: Apply specific PHP versions to different domains (multi-PHP)

⚠️ Changing PHP versions can break websites or apps. Make sure your plugins and themes are compatible with the PHP version you will apply. Contact their development teams if you’re unsure.

Step by step

1. Log in to your hosting control panel

2. Click on the Select PHP version button

3. You will see your current PHP version indicated with a and (current) in a rectangle next to Current PHP version. Click the down arrow ▼ in that same rectangle to get a dropdown of PHP versions available, and select a new PHP version from the dropdown.

4. Once you’ve selected a new PHP version from the list, click the Apply button. Your new PHP version will be applied immediately across your entire hosting account, applicable to all websites and apps.

5. You will see the new PHP version marked with (current). To change the PHP version again, repeat the same steps.
