Check the nameservers and DNS settings your domain uses

Definitions

You can check your domain’s nameservers and DNS settings using the IntoDNS service. IntoDNS is an external website that shows your domain’s nameservers and main DNS records.

ℹ️ Here are some key definitions, to keep in mind:

  • Nameservers: Nameservers show which hosting network directs web traffic to your domain.
  • Main A record: The Main A record is the DNS record that maps your domain name to its primary IP address, directing web traffic to your website.
  • Mail MX (email record): The Mail MX (email) record is the DNS record that specifies the mail servers responsible for receiving and sending email for your domain.

Before you start

✅ It is crucial to know the nameserver and DNS for your domain, to determine which hosting network your domain is pointed to and hosted on.

⚠️ This guide shows you how to view your domain’s current nameservers and DNS settings. It doesn’t cover DNS setup or changes.

🚨Unless you have a custom DNS setup for your website and/or email, by using our nameservers, all of your DNS settings will be automatically updated to ours for you.

Step by step

Access IntoDNS

1. Go to the IntoDNS website

2. Type in your domain name. Do not put https:// in front, for example: infoceptor.com

3. Click the Report button

4. Use the sections below, to view the nameservers and/or DNS settings of your domain

Check your nameservers

To check your domain nameservers, use the steps below.

1. On the IntoDNS report, go to the Domain NS records section

2. Make sure your domain is pointing to the correct nameservers

Check your main A record

To check your domain main A record, use the steps below.

1. On the IntoDNS report, go to the WWW A Record section

2. Check your main A record is pointed to the correct hosting IP address

Note: If you use a CDN, such as Cloudflare, your main A record will be masked. Therefore, you can only check your main A record from within your Cloudflare account, and not on IntoDNS.

Check your mail MX (email) record

To check your domain mail MX (email) record, use the steps below.

1. On the IntoDNS report, go to the MX Records section

2. Verify your mail A record points to the correct hosting IP address or that your MX record is correctly formatted if using an external email service. Some email services have multiple MX records, so you may see more than one.

Update your nameservers or DNS

If you notice your domain nameservers or DNS settings are incorrect, use the steps below.

1. Change your nameservers or DNS at your domain registrar or DNS provider

🚨Note: Unless you have a custom DNS setup for your website and/or email, by using our nameservers, all of your DNS settings will be automatically updated to ours for you.

2. Wait 24 hours for the internet to load the update. You can also monitor nameserver and DNS updates to our network by using this guide: Track DNS propagation on our network for your domain

3. After 24 hours, visit your website on an incognito or private web brower window

4. You can run a new report on IntoDNS, but keep in mind it may take their website 24 to 48 hours for their records to update with your domain’s new settings.
