Manage spam filters for your incoming email
Definitions
Spam filters act like security guards for your email inbox, checking emails for signs of junk or unwanted content and stopping them before they clutter up your email.
Global email spam filters are spam filters that apply across all of the email addresses on your hosting account, regardless of email domain.
Individual email spam filters are spam filters that apply only to an individual email address.
Before you start
✅ There are two types of email spam filters: global and individual. Global ones are created on your hosting control panel whereas individual ones are created in your webmail settings.
ℹ️ Depending on the type of email spam filter you want to create, make sure to use the steps for the correct section below.
Step by step
Global email spam filters
⚠️ Note: When you create a global spam filter, it applies to all of the email addresses on your hosting account, across all domains.
1. Log in to your hosting control panel
2. Click on the Spam Filters button
3. Under Block By, click the down arrow ▼ to get a series of options on a dropdown
4. The dropdown has four different spam filter options. When you select one, you can hover over the question mark symbol ? to get a brief explanation of what it does.
Here is a written explanation of each spam filter option:
- E-mail: This will block all email from a specific email address
- Domain: This will block all email from a specific domain name
- Stop word: This will block all email containing a specific word
🚨Note: Be prudent when using stop word spam filters. For example, if you block the word ‘put’ – then any email containing the word ‘computer’ would also be blocked.
- Size: This will block all email above a specific size you specify
5. Select a spam filter from the dropdown, in our example, we’ll choose E-mail
6. Fill in the spam filter parameter in the Value column. In our example, we’re blocking an email address, so we’ll put in a fictional email address ‘[email protected]’
7. Click the Block button
8. You will see your spam filter listed
9. There is an Options section that can be modified as well:
- Adult Filter: This will block all email with common adult phrases
- Action for filter matches: You can choose the action your mailbox will perform when spam filters are triggered
10. It’s not possible to edit a filter, so if you need to redo it, just delete it and create it again. If you no longer require the filter, simply check the box to its left, click Delete, and follow the prompts to confirm the deletion.
Individual email spam filters
⚠️ Note: When you create an individual spam filter, it only applies to an individual email address.
1. Open and complete all the steps in this guide: Log in to your email via webmail
2. In your webmail, click on Settings
3. Click on Filters
4. Click on + Create
5. Now, you can create a spam filter. You’ll have various filter options. In our example, we’ll filter emails from the fictional sender ‘[email protected]’ directly to our Junk folder.
6. It’s not possible to edit a filter, so if you need to redo it, just delete it and create it again. If you no longer require the filter, simply delete it.
