Create a domain alias (parked domain)
Definitions
A domain alias, also known as a parked domain or domain pointer, is an alternative website name that brings visitors to the same website as a different domain without needing a separate site.
Before you start
⚠️ To make a domain name an alias, it must be registered and have updated nameservers or DNS. Then you can set it up as a domain alias.
ℹ️ Domain aliases can be helpful for a range of scenarios, including:
- ✅ Brand Protection: Register similar domains like ‘mybusiness.net’ to prevent competitors from using them and to make sure visitors reach your site.
- ✅ Marketing Campaigns: Use memorable domains like ‘bestshoedeals2025.com’ for promotions to easily direct customers to your main website.
- ✅ Spelling Mistakes: Create aliases for common typos or alternative spelling so users are redirected to your main site even if they mistype or spell the domain name differently.
Step by step
1. Login to your hosting control panel
2. From the top right, click the down arrow ∨ and choose the domain you want to create a domain alias for
3. Click on the Domain Aliases button
4. Click on the + Create Domain Pointer button
5. In the Source Domain field, put in your domain alias. Remember, this is the domain you want to ‘park’ on top of your main website, i.e. the Target Domain.
- ➡️ In our example, our domain alias is cloudhelpcentre.com – which will bring all visitors to the cloudhelpcenter.com website (Target Domain)
ℹ️ Notice the subtle difference in spelling between our alias cloudhelpcentre.com and our main website cloudhelpcenter.com? This is a common use of domain aliasing / parking.
6. You can now load up your domain alias on your web browser and you will see it takes you to your target domain (main website).
⚠️ Note: If you see an SSL security warning, DNS may still be propagating or the SSL is being activated. Wait a few hours, then check again using a private web browser window.
